Fence repairs in Norwich
Norwich Fencing Contractors repairs garden fences in Norwich and across Norfolk, fixing leaning posts, broken rails and storm damage so a fence that is mostly sound does not have to come down.
Fix what has failed, keep what is sound
Not every tired fence needs replacing. Often the trouble is one or two posts that have rotted at ground level, a rail that has snapped or pulled away, or a row of boards that has split. Put those right and the fence can give years more service for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
When we look at a damaged fence we start with the posts, because that is where most failures begin, then the rails, then the boards or panels and the gravel boards along the bottom. We will tell you honestly what can be repaired and what cannot. Where a fence is beyond sensible repair, we will say so and explain what a replacement would involve rather than patching something that will fail again next winter.
What is included
Depending on what has failed, a repair can include:
- Straightening and re-securing leaning sections
- Replacing rotten or snapped posts in concrete or timber
- Repairing or replacing broken arris and cant rails
- Replacing split or missing featheredge boards
- Renewing rotten gravel boards along the base
- Refitting or replacing storm-damaged panels
- Taking away the broken timber
Before you book
What to plan before you book
-
Make it safe
If a fence is leaning badly or a panel is hanging loose after a storm, keep children and pets away from it and do not try to push it upright on your own.
-
Take photos
Pictures of the damage, close up and from a distance, help us see whether it is a post, a rail or a panel problem before we visit.
-
Check who owns it
If the fence is shared or belongs to a neighbour, agree the repair with them first. They may want to share the cost.
-
Insurance
Storm damage to fences is not covered by every home insurance policy. It is worth checking yours before you book the work.
Worth knowing
Good to know
-
Rot starts at ground level
Timber posts usually rot where they meet the soil, where wood stays damp and air reaches it. The post can look fine above ground and still be ready to snap.
-
Repair spurs have their place
A concrete spur bolted beside a rotten timber post can hold a fence upright again. It is a sound repair for some fences, not for all of them.
-
A repair will look newer
New posts, rails and boards will stand out against weathered timber for a while, until they weather or the fence is stained.
-
Little and often helps
Keeping soil, leaves and climbers away from the base of the fence, and fixing a loose rail early, stops small faults becoming big ones.

Questions
Questions customers ask
Something else on your mind? Ask us when you send your details and we will answer it with your quote.
Can a leaning fence be straightened?
Often, yes. If the cause is a rotten or loose post, replacing or re-setting that post usually brings the fence back upright.
Is it worth repairing an old fence?
If most of the fence is sound and the trouble is in a few posts or rails, a repair is usually good value. If rot runs through the whole fence, replacing it makes more sense, and we will tell you which it is.
Can you repair a fence after storm damage?
Yes. Blown-out panels, snapped posts and broken rails are typical storm repairs.
Can you replace a single post?
Yes. A single failed post can be taken out and replaced, with the boards or panels either side refitted to it.
Who pays to repair a shared fence?
That depends on who owns the boundary, which your deeds may show. Where it is shared or unclear, most neighbours agree to split the cost.
Do you repair gates too?
Yes. A sagging or sticking gate can often be rehung, re-braced or fitted with new hinges. See our garden gates page for more.
